PL leader Joseph Muscat today slammed the Minister for Justice, Dialogue and the Family Chris Said’s statement yesterday that gay couples were not recognised as a family unit, and said that such declarations showed the institutionalised homophobia of the PN government.

Dr Muscat continued that such principles cannot and shouldn’t be applied at law as this constitutes gender discrimination.

“If Lawrence Gonzi is in agreement with the Minister’s view then he proves that the PN embraces homophobic politics, however if the Prim Minsiter does nor concur to Chirs Said’s views then he should reprimand him.”

The PL leader emphasised that in the eyes of Labour, a family was made up of a couple, irrespective of gender and sexual orientation.

Dr Muscat also mentioned how in the past, the PN had already emerged as a homophobic party when during the discussion on the Bill regarding rented houses, the Governement had objected that same-gender couples benefit form the same protection as straight couples.
