The Malawi gay couple who were sentenced to 14 years in prison because they got married, were pardoned and ordered to be released from custody by Malawi’s President Bingu wa Mutharika.

According to the President, Tiwonge Chimbalanga and Steven Monjeza were being released on "humanitarian grounds only" . The President made it clear that homosexuality still remains illegal in the conservative southern African nation.

The Malawi President made this statement during a news conference in the presence of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in Lilongwe.

The court had sentenced both men on charges of unnatural acts and gross indecency. They were arrested in December, a day after their engagement celebrations.
