AD: AD supports European Parliament call for mutual recognition of civil status documents.

Alternattiva Demokratika: Press Release/Stqarrija Stampa 25/11/10; Box 38, Marsa, MTP1001

Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party said it supports the call of the European Parliament report calling for mutual recognition of civil status documents (e.g. birth and death certificates, marriage certificates) to have the same status in all European Union countries. Following this vote, the European Commission will propose ways to enable the recognition of the effects of partnerships and marriages throughout the EU, regardless of whether they unite same-sex or different-sex partners.

Michael Briguglio, AD Chairperson, said: 'The Green group in the European Parliament has been crucial for this progressive move, especially through Ulrike Lunacek MEP, Co-President of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBT Rights. Green parties have always been the most progressive parties when it comes to LGBT rights. AD is against discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and, unlike the other political parties in Malta, we fully support the proposed anti-discrimination directive being proposed within the EU. Besides, we are the only party with a clear declared stand in favour of civil partnerships'

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, AD spokesperson for Civil Rights, said: 'The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights includes the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. So far many countries have introduced different social reforms from anti-discrimination at the place of work to the recognition of civil unions and same-sex marriages, yet many other social reforms need to be carried out. Sexual minorities should be equipped with the right legislation to combat discrimination and guarantee equal treatment in thee economy, education, health, work and social policy’.

AD tappoggja is-sejħa tal-Parlament Ewropew għar-rikonoxximent reċiproku ta’ dokumenti dwar l-istat ċivili.

Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party qalet li tappoġġja s-sejħa tar-rapport tal-Parlament Ewropew li jitlob għar-rikonoxximent reċiproku ta’ dokumenti dwar l-istat ċivili (eż. ċertifikati tat-twelid u mewt, ċertifikati taż-żwieġ) biex dawn ikollhom l-istess stat fil-pajjiżi kollha ta’ l-Unjoni Ewropea. Wara dan il-vot, il-Kummissjoni Ewropea se tipproponi modi li jippermettu r-rikonoxximent ta’ l-effetti ta' civil partnerships u żwiġijiet madwar l-UE, irrispettivament minn jekk dawn humiex bejn nies ta’ l-istess sess jew ta’ sess differenti.

Michael Briguglio, Chairperson ta’ l-AD qal: ‘Il-Grupp tal-Hodor fil-Parlament Ewropew kien kruċjali għal dan il-pass progressiv, speċjalment permezz tal-MPE Ulrike Lunacek Ko-President tal-Intergrupp tal-Parlament Ewropew dwar id-Drittijiet LGBT. Il-partiti tal-Hodor dejjem huma l-iktar partiti progressivi dwar id-drittijiet LGBT. AD hi kontra d-diskriminazzjoni fuq il-bażi ta’ orjentazzjoni sesswali u, kuntrarjament għall-partiti politiċi oħra f'Malta, aħna jappoġġjaw bis-sħiħ id-direttiva kontra d-diskriminazzjoni li qed tiġu proposta fl-UE. Barra minn hekk, aħna l-unika partit b’pozizzjoni cara u ddikjarata favur civil partnerships’.

Yvonne Arqueros Ebejer, Kelliema ta 'AD għall-Drittijiet Ċivili, qalet: ‘Ic-charter ta’ l-UE dwar id-Drittijiet Fundamentali tinkludi l-projbizzjoni ta' diskriminazzjoni fuq il-bażi ta’ orjentazzjoni sesswali. S'issa ħafna pajjiżi introduċew riformi soċjali differenti, minn miżuri kontra d-diskriminazzjoni fil-post tax-xogħol sa rikonoxximent ta’ civil partnerships u żwiġijiet-istess sess, iżda baqa’ hafna xi jsir. Minoranzi sesswali għandhom ikunu mghammra b’ligijiet li jiġġieldu d-diskriminazzjoni u jiggarantixxu trattament ugwali fl-ekonomija, edukazzjoni, saħħa, ix-xogħol, u l-politika soċjali’.
