Pink money is not some kind of new currency but it describes the growing purchasing power of the gay community and

Similarly, the pink vote is not a coloured voting ballot, but rather the voting rights of gays and lesbian and their growing political leverage.

With the rise of the gay rights movement, pink money has gone from being a fringe market to a thriving industry in many parts of the Western world such as the United States and United Kingdom.

However, the growing influence of the gay lobby is also being felt in Malta and although no studies have yet been carried out to determine the size and implications of the pink economy in Malta, nonetheless the LGBT community is being targeted by businesses.

Sunday newspaper Illum speaks to economist Marie Briguglio and president of the student organisation We Are Luisa Tolu on the new realities in Malta.
