The Pope is “shocked” by Malta’s Civil Unions Bill, which will allow gay couples to adopt children, Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna has told The Sunday Times of Malta.
Defending his decision to use his Christmas homily to reiterate that a family had to be built around a man and a woman, Mgr Scicluna said he had aired these concerns with Pope Francis when he met him on December 12.
“We discussed many aspects...and when I raised the issue that’s worrying me as a bishop [the right for gay couples to adopt] he encouraged me to speak out," Bishop Scicluna said.

Rather than expressing “shock” at the prospect of gay coup[es' adopting children, the Pope (and the Roman Catholic Church in general) should soberly consider who is to blame for the existence of orphans and who is helping to reduce their number.
ReplyDeleteIs it not the truth that one reason for the existence of many orphans is parental abuse? That is, orphans have either run away from their parents after being mistreated or have been removed from their parents by the authorities after the authorities learned that their parents had abused them? Who are the parents in question? Are they all heterosexuals? All homosexuals? Or are some heterosexuals and some homosexuals? Is it not the truth that almost every one is a heterosexual?
Is it not the truth that many single teenage mothers put their children up for adoption because for one reason or another they cannot care for them? Who are those teenage mothers? Are they all heterosexuals? All homosexuals? Or are some heterosexuals and some homosexuals? Is it not the truth that almost every one is a heterosexual?
Is it not the truth that wars create orphans? Who starts wars? Is it not mostly heterosexuals?
And why are not all orphans adopted? Many heterosexual couples and single heterosexual parents do adopt children, but since not enough heterosexual couples are willing or able to, many children remain orphans or are shunted from one foster family to another.
Thus, here we have a problem created almost exclusively by heterosexuals, a problem which heterosexuals are helping to solve, but not enough of them are, so that a significant number of children remain unadopted, often for years.
The Roman Catholic Church – nay, every right-minded person – should be happy that gay couples are willing to help solve a problem that gay people have almost never created.
Better two mothers or two fathers than no mother and no father at all.
If you disagree with me, what are you personally doing to reduce the number of orphans?
