The Justice Ministry will be presenting an amendment to legislation in parliament in order to facilitate the changeover process for transsexuals.
Speaking to this newspaper, Justice Minister Carm Mifsud Bonnici said that transsexual people will, as a result, be able to present one medical certificate by the doctor who performed their sex change, rather than having to undergo the whole process again at the legal stage.
Dr Mifsud Bonnici said: "At present, people who undergo gender reassignment have to go to court to have the change in sex noted in their birth certificate. This entails another medical re-examination by a court-appointed doctor to verify the facts. This amendment will do away with this requirement in that a medical certificate even from the doctor who performed the surgery would suffice for the court."
