Pope Francis looks down as he leads the weekly audience in Saint Peter's Square at the Vatican April 22, 2015.

(Reuters) - Pope Francis has held a private meeting with France's nominee as ambassador to the Holy See, the French government said on Wednesday in the latest twist in a months-long stand-off over the Vatican's failure to confirm his posting.

Paris nominated the government's head of protocol, Laurent Stefanini, for the post on Jan. 5 but has still not heard back from the Vatican - a delay that French and Italian media have said is due to his homosexuality.

Matthew Hodson writes on why avoiding dating HIV-positive people could be a bad strategy

75 reader comments

Matthew Hodson, the Chief Executive of GMFA, writes on the continued stigmatisation of HIV-positive people, and argues that avoiding sex or a relationship with someone HIV-positive is actually a bad strategy.

I’ve been living with diagnosed HIV for many years. In that time I’ve had my share of sexual and romantic rejections on the basis of my HIV status. While these don’t make up any of my happiest memories, I’ve tried to take it on the chin. I’ve always been a firm believer that individuals have a right to work out the sexual strategy that is right for them – and that included rejecting people on the basis of their HIV status. But, you know what – I’ve had a change of heart. It’s bullshit.

A new video advocating for LGBT Irish people to “bring your family with you” to vote for same-sex marriage next month is pretty emotional.

The Republic of Ireland is set to vote on May 22 on a proposal to introduce civil same-sex marriage.

Fr Mark Montebello has agreed to stop going against Church teachings, which say that priests should not officiate during ceremonies involving gay people.

This was the outcome of a meeting of one hour between Archbishop Mgr Charles Scicluna and the Dominican Friar, following a story in The Malta Independent which included photos of Fr Montebello blessing the rings of a gay couple during an engagement ceremony.

In what can be described as the first hitch in his term as Archbishop, Mgr Charles Scicluna has called an urgent meeting with Fr Mark Montebello after a story carried by The Malta Independent which exposed the priest blessing the rings in an engagement ceremony between two gay men.

This morning, The Malta Independent published a photo showing Fr Montebello blessing the rings in an engagement ceremony which took place last Friday.Pictures of the ceremony were published on Facebook showing Fr Montebello blessing their rings.

Controversial priest Fr Mark Montebello last Friday officiated the ceremony in which two gay men got engaged, The Malta Independent has learnt.

Pictures of the ceremony were published on Facebook showing Fr Montebello blessing their rings.

The officiating of civil unions, including engagement ceremonies, by priests goes against the guidelines of the Church and could be interpreted as being yet another incident in which Fr Montebello openly causes embarrassment to the Church. He has been reprimanded for his outspokenness by the Church in the past.

Parliament approved the Transgender Bill a year after the Civil Unions Bill. Photo: Matthew Mirabelli

It was April 1, so there was slight hope it was a joke. Alas, it was not. Our Parliament, in its last sitting at the Palace before it rose for a month-long Easter recess, approved the so-called Gender Identity Bill.

It was a unanimous vote, although two-thirds of the Opposition were not there. Maybe they were ashamed, and rightfully so. They should be.
